The People’s Republic of China, has expressed optimism that the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran will recommit themselves to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreed by both countries in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, expressed the optimism while addressing journalists in Beijing, China.
He was responding to questions regarding the recent visit of Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, to Beijing and remarks by Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, that China supports dialogue, opposes the use of force and supports international law.
Guo also responded to Araghchi’s recent presentation of new ideas for re-starting diplomacy while participating in the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, with 14 points interim agreement, was signed by the United States and Iran between June 17, 2026.
The MoU which had Pakistan as the mediator, aimed to halt hostilities arising from the military combat between the United States and Iran.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson said: “China supports resolving disputes through political and diplomatic means. It is hoped that Iran and the U.S. will choose peace, recommit themselves to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, and resume dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible.”
Guo further said since day one of the conflict, China has been making active efforts to promote the end of the fighting and talks for peace.
“We stand ready to uphold the series of initiatives and propositions put forward by President Xi Jinping for peace and stability in the Middle East, and continue working for restoring peace and tranquility in the Middle East and Gulf region at an early date,” Guo stated.
