The Ebonyi State Youth Leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Kalu Okechukwu, has expressed concern over the recent remarks by Governor Francis Nwifuru, at the inauguration of the newly elected local government chairmen.
Addressing journalists in Abakaliki, Okechukwu said the governor’s reported warning that local government chairmen could be removed if the opposition wins in their areas, and his call to “deal with the opposition mercilessly,” had raised concerns about political participation in the state.
He said elected local government officials should be allowed to discharge their responsibilities without undue political pressure, adding that political parties should be free to organise, campaign, and seek the support of voters.
“The governor’s statement raises questions about the multiparty system guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Local government councils should focus on service to the people rather than political disagreements,” he said.
He said the state government should present its record of achievements to the people as it seeks another term, adding that voters should ultimately determine who governs them through free and credible elections.
“The best and only legitimate approach to seeking a second tenure is to account for stewardship before the electorate,” he said.
He urged the PDP youths across the 13 local government areas of the state to remain peaceful and law-abiding, while participating in legitimate political activities.
“Violence is not an option, neither is surrender. We will defend our democratic space within the bounds of the law,” he said.
Okechukwu also appealed to the governor to uphold the rights of citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations, and create an atmosphere that allows different political parties to operate freely.
“Leadership is not about instilling fear; it is about inspiring confidence through good governance,” he said.
He added that the PDP would pursue any concerns arising from political activities through lawful channels, including the courts and relevant government institutions.
He further called on civil society organisations, traditional institutions, and the media, to encourage peaceful political participation and respect for the rights of all citizens in the state.
