The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Federal Government to take decisive steps to prevent future school kidnappings following the rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the opposition party welcomed the victims’ safe return after 56 days in captivity, describing it as a major relief for their families and the nation.
The PDP commended the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government, security agencies and other individuals and organisations whose efforts contributed to the successful rescue operation.
While noting that details of the operation were still limited, the party stressed that no child or teacher should be subjected to the trauma of abduction while pursuing education.
“Although details of the rescue remain limited, we commend the Federal Government, Oyo State government, security agencies and all individuals and organisations whose efforts contributed to the safe return of the victims,” the party said.
“No one should be subjected to such trauma in the pursuit of education,” the statement added.
The PDP called on the Federal Government to strengthen security measures across schools and communities to prevent a recurrence of such incidents, insisting that protecting lives and property remains the government’s foremost responsibility.
“We call on the Federal Government to take decisive steps to prevent a recurrence of such heinous acts. The protection of lives and property remains the first responsibility of government and is the irreducible minimum that our country and its citizens deserve,” the PDP stated.
The statement followed the Presidency’s announcement that security agencies rescued all the abducted pupils and teachers during a coordinated operation that also led to the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers, while others were neutralised.
