The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory ( FCT), Nyesom Wike, yesterday, announced the dissolution of executives of 14 state chapters of the party.
The publicity secretary of the Wike-backed PDP Caretaker Committee, Haruna Jungun, said the affected states are Borno, Bauchi, Oyo, Zamfara, Yobe, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Delta, Taraba, Kano and Lagos.
Jungun, who said the dissolution of the SWC was taken at a meeting of the caretaker committee, noted that congresses for the 14 states had been scheduled to begin from January 9, 2026, after which the party would hold a national Convention.
The PDP has been enmeshed in crisis over a tussle for the control of party machinery between PDP Governors and the FCT Minister. The crisis in the opposition party escalated, recently, after the immediate past National Working Committee (NWC) led by Umar Damagum, with the support of the PDP Governors, organised a national convention in Ibadan, where Tanimu Turaki was elected as national chairman.

On the flip-side, Wike’s camp, which had earlier obtained a judgment from a Federal High Court, in Abuja, to halt the exercise, dismissed the convention as a nullity. The FCT minister’s camp announced the constitution of a 13-man caretaker committee headed by Abdulraham Mohammed to manage the affairs of the party for 60 days.
Earlier, Mohammed, while speaking before the committee went into a closed door session, said they were the authentic leadership of the major opposition party.
He said: “We are here again as caretaker committee to look into the activities of the party across the federation, to make sure that everything goes the way it’s supposed to, to make the public to understand that we have a formidable team that can take responsibility of the day-to-day activities of the party across the federation.
“And I want to use this opportunity to call the attention of the public, who may be hearing and seeing a gathering of meetings here and there. The public should not panic.
“We have only one PDP under my leadership and my team as the caretaker committee of our great party. Party is all about being in line with the constitution of the party and that of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
