Patriotism, collective responsibility panacea to Nigeria’s challenges — Kanu

Daniel Kanu

Former leader of the Youth Earnestly Ask for Abacha (YEAA) and Chairman of New Deal Organisation, Daniel Kanu, has called on Nigerians to embrace patriotism and collective responsibility as a panacea to the nation’s challenges.

In his 66th Independence Day message to Nigerians on Friday, Kanu said he listened to President Bola Tinubu’s anniversary speech with keen interest and described it as sincere and progressive.

According to him, the President’s speech, which acknowledged failures of the past and appealed for collective effort to uplift the nation, inspired his response.

Kanu urged Nigerians to put politics aside and support the government in its efforts to lift the country from its present difficulties.

He said Nigeria’s democracy, modelled after the United States system, is anchored on the principle of ‘We, the People’,  as enshrined in the US Constitution, implying collective responsibility beyond those in authority.

“Nigeria is where it is today because Nigerians have failed themselves at virtually every level, both those in government and those outside government. We must learn to tell ourselves the truth and stop indulging in self-deception,” Kanu stated.

The New Deal chairman said the country’s problems did not start with the present administration and would not be solved through politics and strikes, but through patriotism and deliberate inculcation of good values.

He faulted the three-day warning strike declared by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) over demands that expired on September 30, 2026, noting that it would involve additional government expenditure amid fiscal challenges.

Kanu said Nigeria’s problems could be traced to the failure to uphold basic values and principles, including integrity, honesty, respect, competence, compassion, accountability and customer service.

Quoting former US President John F. Kennedy, he urged Nigerians to put the country first and embrace integrity, discipline, competence, compassion and patriotism.

“The responsibility for building the Nigeria we desire cannot rest solely on the shoulders of those in government. It is the collective responsibility of “ We, the People,” he added.
