At least two people, including a pastor, were murdered in Apa Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State when suspected armed herdsmen launched new attacks on communities.

The two-day incursion also injured numerous community members, and many others fled their houses in fear.

Gunmen reportedly attacked the settlements of Oiji, Ojantelle, and Edikwu, shooting intermittently and causing widespread panic.

A local source said the attackers invaded Edikwu Icho on Sunday around 1:45 p.m., catching residents off guard.

“As the people ran, they laid an ambush and killed two persons. A pastor returning from church was among the victims,” the eyewitness said. The second victim, identified as Ngbede, was allegedly shot at close range during the attack.

The source added that the assailants struck again on Monday, targeting Oiji community, but were repelled by local youths with support from security personnel.

Some women were reportedly raped during the attacks, while the injured were evacuated to a hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incidents, the Chairman of Apa LGA, Adams Ocheiga, said, “Two people were ambushed and killed at Edikwu Ward 11 yesterday, while Oiji was attacked this morning but repelled immediately by vigilant youths.”

He added that the council is working with security agencies to prevent further attacks and restore calm.

Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
