The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has condemned the reckless behaviour of a tricycle rider whose violation of traffic laws caused a serious accident in Ibadan, leaving pedestrian Mr. Oladayo Adisa severely injured.
In a statement issued on Sunday by OYRTMA Chairman, Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd.), the accident occurred on Thursday morning near a petrol station when the tricycle operator was driving against traffic at high speed. The victim was attempting to cross the road when he was struck.
Major Adesagba described the incident as a result of “irresponsible and dangerous driving,” stressing that one-way driving remains a persistent threat to public safety.
“Mr. Adisa was caught off guard and sustained severe facial injuries due to the carelessness of the tricycle rider,” the chairman said. “The government will not tolerate such recklessness. We are committed to strict enforcement of traffic regulations to ensure the safety of all road users.”
Eyewitnesses reported that the tricycle rider showed no remorse and claimed he lacked the financial means to assist the injured man.
Thanks to the swift intervention of OYRTMA officials and the petrol station manager, Mr. Adisa was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
Upon regaining consciousness, Mr. Adisa expressed gratitude for the prompt assistance, stating, “If OYRTMA catches any rider taking one way, they should not be released until taken to court.”
In a separate development, a fatal accident involving a TVS motorcycle with registration number LUY 306 UT occurred at Agbarigo, Mokola, Ibadan, claiming one life and leaving two others injured.
OYRTMA’s emergency response team promptly transported the victims to the Oyo State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan. During the rescue, officials recovered the victims’ personal belongings, including a bag containing a significant sum of money, which was returned to the family, demonstrating the agency’s commitment to integrity and public service.
Commending the Oyo State Government for its efforts to improve road safety, Major Adesagba reiterated OYRTMA’s dedication to upholding traffic laws and protecting lives.
“We appreciate the government’s continuous efforts to ensure safety on our roads. OYRTMA will continue to support these initiatives and hold traffic violators accountable,” he said.
He concluded by urging the public to comply with traffic rules and cooperate with traffic officers to prevent further tragedies.
“Together, through shared responsibility and cooperation, we can make our roads safer for everyone,” he added.
