The Oyo State Government on Thursday conferred the prestigious title of Justice of the Peace (JP) on 345 distinguished citizens, calling on them to view the honour not merely as a title but as a solemn responsibility to uphold justice, peace, and integrity in their communities.
The ceremony, held at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, State Secretariat, Ibadan, attracted top government officials, members of the judiciary, religious leaders, and other dignitaries from across the state.
Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal congratulated the appointees, urging them to discharge their duties responsibly. He cautioned against misusing the title, noting that the honour could be withdrawn if abused.
“To be singled out as one of the recipients tells all that you are a man of peace. It shows your track record is clean, and you are not associated with any form of crime,” he said. “Take your time to verify documents before swearing oaths or assigning signatures to avoid signing illegal papers. This award is withdrawable, so study the manual and avoid turning it into a business venture.”
The Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, emphasised that the title carries a higher responsibility to ensure fairness and justice in society.
