The Oyo State Police Command said it has launched an investigation into viral claims by a man identified as Shawama that he had killed 32 people in Ibadan, the state capital.

Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olayinka Ayanlade made this known in a Tuesday statement.

An undated video sighted by this reporter shows a man, identified as Shawama, being asked by another man in Yoruba language to state how many people he had killed in Ibadan so far.

Responding, Shawama claimed he had killed 32 people, adding that the police were aware of his purported exploits and still freed him.

However, the Oyo police spokesman stated there was  no record of the individual having been arrested by any formation of the command.

The statement reads, “The Oyo State Police Command has obtained a video in which an individual identified as Shawama, in the company of others, claims to have killed 32 people. The Command wishes to categorically state that there is no record of such an individual having been arrested by our operatives at any point.

“However, as a responsible and responsive agency, the Command has launched a thorough investigation into the allegations and the confessional statements contained in the video. The investigation is being conducted leveraging advanced technology, including digital forensics and digital footprint analysis, to ensure a robust and credible outcome.

“The command further appeals to members of the public with information that can lead to the identification and arrest of Shawama or his accomplices to come forward and assist law enforcement in bringing them to justice.

“The command assures the public that updates on the progress and outcome of the investigation will be shared in due course.”
