The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old suspected armed robber and recovered a tricycle allegedly stolen at gunpoint in Ilorin, Kwara State, during an intelligence-led stop-and-search operation.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the operation was carried out by operatives of the Command Monitoring Unit following credible intelligence from members of the public.
The police said they received information that a suspected stolen tricycle was being driven along the Oyo–Ogbomoso Road. Acting on the tip-off, operatives mounted a stop-and-search operation at the Irepo area, where they intercepted the tricycle bearing registration number Lagos EPE 236 QR.
The rider, identified as Akindele Seun, 31, was arrested at the scene.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to robbing the owner of the tricycle at gunpoint in Ilorin before fleeing with the vehicle into Oyo State.
The command said the recovered tricycle has been taken into police custody while efforts are ongoing to trace and identify its rightful owner for its return.
Police added that investigations are continuing to identify and arrest other individuals who may have been involved in the crime.
Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, reaffirmed the command’s determination to ensure the state does not become a safe haven for criminals.
He stated that individuals who commit crimes within or outside Oyo State and attempt to transport stolen property or other proceeds of crime into the state would be tracked, arrested, investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police commissioner also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support efforts aimed at protecting lives and property across the state.
