Oyo police arrest suspected armed robber, recover stolen motorcycle in Ibadan

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a stolen motorcycle following a swift response to a distress report in Ibadan.

The command said the suspect, identified as Shafiu Nuhu, was apprehended by operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) after allegedly attacking and robbing a commercial motorcyclist along Adeniji Estate, Apata.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, when the police received credible information from a concerned citizen that a commercial motorcyclist, Muhammadu Kamilu, had been attacked by a passenger who allegedly struck him with an iron hammer before making away with his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle.

The statement said the VCRU operatives acted promptly on the intelligence, leading to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the stolen Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number AJW 842 QU. The iron hammer allegedly used in the attack was also recovered.

Police disclosed that the victim sustained injuries during the attack. A good Samaritan, identified as Nathaniel Ibrahim, who reportedly intervened in an attempt to rescue the victim, was also injured.

Both men were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they received medical treatment.

The command further revealed that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to operating as a lone armed robber who specialised in attacking and robbing commercial motorcyclists within Ibadan and its environs.

It added that investigations are ongoing to establish his possible involvement in other robbery cases and recover any additional exhibits linked to his alleged criminal activities.

Commending the bravery of the good Samaritan and the vigilance of members of the public, the Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, urged residents to remain security-conscious and continue providing timely and credible information to the police.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and assured residents that efforts to rid Oyo State of criminal elements would continue.
