Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is set to announce a former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of the state, Bayo Lawal, the Chairman, Oyo State Housing Corporation, as the new deputy governor of the state.

Daily Sun gathered that Lawal’s name has been forwarded to the House of Assembly for confirmation as the new deputy governor.

The development followed the removal from office, Rauf Olaniyan, as the deputy governor of the state Monday.

Makinde, who had secured the ticket of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to seek re-election for a second term in office, had few weeks ago, picked Lawal as his running mate for the 2023 governorship poll in the state.

Twenty-three lawmakers of the 33-member legislature, elected on the platform of the PDP, had voted in support of the removal of the deputy governor of the state, Rauf Olaniyan, on Monday, though he has filed a case before the Court of Appeal to stop the impeachment.

He was impeached by members of the state House of Assembly on Monday around 11:30 am. He was impeached at an emergency plenary held by the lawmakers today, following receipt of the reports from the seven-man investigative panel that was set up last week Thursday by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Munta Abimbola.

The allegations against Olaniyan included gross misconduct, abuse of office, financial recklessness, abandonment of office and official duty, as well as insubordination and other offences.

The panel, Daily Sun gathered, concluded its sittings within three days on Saturday July 16,2022. The report was said to have indicted the impeached deputy governor, and the panel recommended that he should be impeached.

At the plenary on Monday, the report of the panel was read by the Majority Leader of the House, Sanjo Adedoyin.

The Speaker, Debo Ogundoyin, had during the plenary pronounced the removal of Olaniyan as deputy governor based on the report of the investigative panel that he said found Olaniywn guilty of the charges against him.
