The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Oyo State chapter, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, has called for a renewed and stronger alliance between Muslims and Christians as a strategic response to Nigeria’s security and development challenges.
Rev. Ogundiya made the call during a courtesy visit to the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, His Eminence Alhaji Dawud Makanjuola Akinola De-Damak, at his residence in Ikolaba, Ibadan. He noted that the visit relevant to the growing role of religious leadership in shaping national unity and social stability.
Accompanied by CAN’s Oyo State Secretary, Very Rev. Samuel Owolabi; former chairman, Rt. Col. Apostle Joshua Akinyemiju; and Bishop Daniel Oluwajimade, the CAN chairman praised the Aare Musulumi for his consistent advocacy for peace, religious tolerance and harmonious coexistence across Yorubaland.
According to Rev. Ogundiya, the nation’s quest for economic growth and political stability cannot be separated from religious harmony, noting that faith leaders must work collectively to promote understanding and discourage narratives that fuel division.

Responding, Alhaji Akinola De-Damak stressed that unity between Muslims and Christians remains a fundamental reality of Nigerian society, pointing out that many families across the country are religiously diverse yet united by shared values and mutual respect.
The Aare Musulumi also warned against framing insecurity as a religious issue, insisting that terrorism and violent crimes affect all Nigerians regardless of faith. He urged religious leaders and political actors alike to resist divisive rhetoric and instead promote collective action against insecurity.
In addition, he appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors and relevant authorities to intensify security efforts nationwide, emphasizing that peace and religious tolerance are indispensable foundations for sustainable national development.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continued engagement and interfaith collaboration, describing unity and tolerance as vital tools for addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic and security challenges.
