The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described claims of an impeachment plot against Governor Seyi Makinde as a “poorly written script” designed to mislead the public and attract sympathy.

In a statement issued in Ibadan on Tuesday by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the party dismissed the narrative as baseless, insisting it was orchestrated to divert attention from what it termed mounting political challenges facing the governor.

The controversy follows denials by some members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, who are believed to be loyal to the governor, distancing themselves from any impeachment move. The lawmakers had alleged that the purported plot was being sponsored by prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, and former First Lady, Florence Ajimobi.

Reacting, the APC refuted the alleged involvement of the named individuals, describing the claims as unsubstantiated and politically motivated.

The party further argued that, contrary to the narrative being circulated, the governor should have faced impeachment earlier if the Assembly had fully exercised its constitutional responsibilities.

According to the statement, the impeachment allegation was a calculated move to create a “soft landing” for the governor among his supporters, particularly amid uncertainties surrounding his political future ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The APC also linked the emergence of the impeachment narrative to recent claims by former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, who alleged a plan to dethrone the Olubadan, suggesting the development was an attempt to deflect public attention from that controversy.

The opposition party maintained that no external forces were pursuing the impeachment of the governor, asserting instead that any such process would be based solely on constitutional grounds.

It listed alleged infractions against the governor, including mismanagement of local government funds, land-related controversies, contract cost inflation, and alleged diversion of relief funds meant for victims of the Bodija explosion.

The APC concluded that what it described as “false alarm and propaganda” would not shield the governor from accountability, adding that the allegations raised remain serious and could have political consequences in the future.
