The presidency has shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the daring rescue of the abducted Oyo schoolchildren and teachers, saying eight of their abductors were captured while others were killed by security forces.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga disclosed this in a post on his verified X handle on Friday.

Onanuga, who earlier broke the news of the rescue, said the arrested assailants have been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS).

He added that the government made no concession to the terrorists to secure the release of the pupils and teachers, who had been in captivity since May 15.

The presidential spokesman said, “Updated: in the course of the rescue operation, eight of the kidnappers were arrested and are now in DSS custody, while some of them were neutralised.

“There was no quid pro quo in the rescue as one of the terrorists, a kingpin, that the kidnappers demanded his release, is being prosecuted for his atrocities. The security agencies will give full account soon.”

Daily Sun recalls that 46 pupils and teachers were abducted from three schools in Yawota and Esiele communities in Oriire local government area of Oyo State on May 15, prompting nationwide calls for their rescue.
