Pledges to address concerns on emergency response

The Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has offered to offset the medical bills of victims of the Calabar gas station explosion.
The governor made the offer when he paid an on-the-spot assessment visit to the site of the explosion at the Fonex Gas Station along Edibe Edibe Road in Calabar South LGA.
Governor Otu described the destruction as deeply shocking, noting that it underscores the need for stricter safety measures, adding that his administration will address these concerns.
“I visited the site of the gas explosion at Edibe Edibe in Calabar South, and what I saw was deeply shocking. The level of destruction to lives and property is significant.
” I have directed free medical treatment for all victims and assured that government will act swiftly, including considering compensation for affected residents.

“This incident highlights the urgent need for stricter safety measures, especially regarding facilities located within residential areas.
“Concerns about emergency response, including fire service access, will also be addressed and my thoughts are with all those affected. We will stand by you”, the governor said.
The explosion occurred over the weekend, and the Cross River State Police Command confirmed that 38 persons were affected by the incident.
The victims were evacuated to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where they are receiving treatment for various degrees of burns.
No life was lost as a result of the blast, and the extent of damage to properties is still being ascertained by the authorities.
