A group of innovative youths in Osun State has successfully developed an African Artificial Intelligence ecosystem and a large language model capable of understanding African voices, languages, and perspectives.

The team—comprising Okechukwu Nwaozor, Raji Abdulazeem, Woleola Abdullateef, Shuaib Abiodun, and Precious Obiesie—began this ambitious project in 2022 and is now seeking investor support to realise a complete AI revolution in Africa.

Nwaozor, who started without any external funding, lab facilities, or a large team, explained that he and they relied solely on a laptop, determination, and a vision to create something meaningful.

Abdulazeem, a Data Scientist, and students of Statistics at Osun State University, played a crucial role in collecting and structuring the datasets that power their models, ensuring that they reflect Africa’s rich diversity through clean and reliable data.

Abdullateef, a Product Designer, worked on transforming complex AI systems into user-friendly experiences, enabling users to engage in natural, relatable conversations with OkeyAI, their conversational AI system.

Abiodun, as the Marketer, Media Manager, who is a student of Public Health at Osun State University, focused on shaping the brand’s identity and building public trust, while Obiesie, the Chief of Staff and Co-founder, coordinated the team’s efforts and maintained organisational focus.

Central to their work is SSAILM, their proprietary large language model that powers OkeyAI, accessible at OkeyAI. They have developed multiple versions of SSAILM, with the current focus on SSAILM 5, which aims to showcase Africa’s AI capabilities on the global stage.

The team faces the challenge of ensuring SSAILM 5 does not follow the path of earlier versions that fell short due to limited resources. They are actively seeking funding, partnerships, and investors who share their vision of empowering African innovation and creating a sustainable AI infrastructure.

“OkeyMeta is not just building a product; we are shaping a future where technology speaks for and from Africa. We are demonstrating that young African developers, designers, and analysts can create world-class AI technology with a global impact,” the team stated.
