The Osun State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old man, Babalola Saheed, in connection with the alleged exhumation and mutilation of the corpse of 22-year-old Rukibat Babatunde.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura.

The statement explained that the victim’s father reported her death on 12 October 2026, following a brief illness. She was buried the same day in accordance with Islamic rites at Olomo’s Compound in the Feesun area of Iwo.

However, the family was thrown into shock when the grave was reportedly dug up around 2:00 a.m.

The perpetrators severed the deceased’s head and left arm for reasons yet to be established, the police said.

Acting on the report, a thorough investigation was launched by the operatives, leading to the arrest of the principal suspect, Babalola Saheed.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to his involvement in the crime, and efforts are currently underway to apprehend two other suspects who are still at large,” the statement read.

The police confirmed that the severed head and left arm have been recovered and handed over to the victim’s father for a proper reburial, while the cutlass allegedly used in the crime was recovered as an exhibit.

The police assured that the arrested suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police condemned the heinous act, assuring the public of a diligent investigation to bring all co-conspirators to justice.

The command urged anyone with useful information regarding the incident or the whereabouts of the fleeing suspects to report to the nearest police station, while appealing for calm as the law takes its course.
