Voting was disrupted in Modakeke Ward 10, Osun State, on Saturday after persons suspected to be policemen allegedly seized election materials and dispersed voters and officials.
The incident reportedly occurred after voting activities had commenced peacefully at the polling area, according to an eyewitness who spoke about the development.
The witness alleged that the suspected policemen arrived at the area, took away the election materials and subsequently released what was described as tear gas, forcing those present to flee.
“All the election agents and corps members took to their heels as soon as they arrived,” the eyewitness said.
The reported incident caused panic among voters, while election officials, party agents and other personnel at the polling area reportedly abandoned the location for their safety.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the identity and status of the persons who allegedly removed the materials, could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
There was also no immediate statement from the Nigeria Police Force or the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirming the reported seizure or explaining the circumstances surrounding the disruption.
The incident occurred as voters across Osun State are currently participating in the governorship election to determine the next governor of the state.
