The choice of Orumba for the AMIC and Aerotropolis reveals the profound good judgement and far-sightedness of Governor Soludo. For years, the greatest constraint to large-scale industrialization in Anambra State has been the availability of contiguous, sizable land in our densely populated commercial heartlands. Orumba provides the answer.
Sitting strategically in the Southern senatorial zone, Orumba offers what no other location could: centrality and scale. It is centrally located, a natural bridge connecting Anambra to our brothers in Imo, Abia and Enugu, with easy arteries to Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka and the international gateway of the Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport at Umueri. It is a location that guarantees that goods produced in Orumba can reach every market in the Southeast within an hour, and every market in Nigeria within a day.

This is not an industrial estate squeezed into leftover land; this is a city deliberately planned from the ground up, with an airport at its heart, designed for global commerce. It is vision in its purest form.

The AMIC and Aerotropolis are conceived as a complete economic ecosystem. It is designed to end the era of fragmented, survivalist enterprise and usher in the era of organized, competitive, and export-driven industrialization. Its zones tell the story of Anambra’s full economic potential:
1. The Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ): Here, Anambra’s agricultural wealth will finally be translated into industrial wealth. Our rice from Ayamelum, our cassava, our oil palm, and our vegetables will no longer leave the state as raw commodities, but as processed, packaged, branded goods for the world.
2. The Automotives and Motor Vehicles Zone: This is a nod to our DNA. Nnewi is already the Detroit of Africa. This zone will formalize, modernize, and expand that ingenuity — from spare parts fabrication to full vehicle assembly, creating a true automotive cluster that can compete with the world.
3. Light Engineering, Construction Materials, Electrical & Electronics and General Manufacturing: This is the backbone zone, where Anambra’s famous apprenticeship and fabrication talent will be given world-class infrastructure, steady power, and access to technology to produce everything our nation currently imports.
4. The Export Emporium and Aerotropolis Hub: This is the game-changer. With its aerotropolis concept, AMIC is not built to serve only Onitsha Main Market; it is built to serve Africa and the world. Products made in Anambra can be cleared, certified, and airlifted directly from the city. This is how we plug Anambra directly into the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
5. The Chemical and Pharmaceutical Zone: In a post-COVID world, health security is economic security. This zone will harness Anambra’s massive pharmaceutical trading expertise in Onitsha to become a manufacturing powerhouse for drugs, chemicals, and industrial inputs.
6. The Textile and Leather Processing Zone: From the leather clusters in Ogbunike to the garment makers in Aba corridor, this zone will revive our textile heritage and clothe the continent.
7. The Entertainment, Innovation and Creative Zone: Because the new Anambra understands that industry is not just machines. It is movies, music, content, software, and youth creativity. This zone will give our teeming, brilliant youth a place to create and monetize their genius.
The necessity and the vision
Why are AMIC and Aerotropolis necessary? It is because Anambra cannot continue to be a state of traders without factories, of immense wealth without commensurate jobs. We have the largest diaspora of entrepreneurs in Africa, but our homeland has lacked the platform to absorb that energy. Our young men and women remain trapped between unemployment and dangerous migration because we have not built the productive economy that matches our human capital.
Governor Soludo has understood this fundamental truth: Anambra does not need another market; Anambra needs a productive base. The AMIC and Aerotropolis are the structural answer to unemployment, to capital flight, to low IGR, and to the economic vulnerability of our people.
This is the mark of a leader who thinks not in four-year cycles, but in fifty-year legacies. Prof. Soludo, the renowned economist and reformer, is applying the same intellectual rigor and bold reform that defined his stewardship at the Central Bank to the very soil of Anambra. It is visionary economics — moving from consumption to production, from informal to formal, from local to global.
No government, however visionary, can build an industrial city alone. The AMIC and Aerotropolis are an invitation. To Ndi Anambra at home — this is your opportunity to transition from shop owner to factory owner, from trader to industrialist.
