OPSAN to FG: Halt admissions until all O’Level results are released

The Owners of Private Schools Association of Nigeria (OPSAN) has asked the Federal Government to immediately suspend admissions into universities for the 2026/2027 academic session until all outstanding WAEC, NECO and NABTEB results are released.

It warned that continuing the exercise would shut out candidates awaiting the results, even as some universities have already concluded admissions into professional courses.

OPSAN National President, Prof. Uzochukwu Solomon Nwanonyuo, raised the concern in a statement issued after a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, describing the situation as unfair to candidates who depend on NECO and NABTEB results for admission.

He said JAMB had commenced admissions when some WAEC results were still outstanding and NECO and NABTEB results had yet to be released.

According to OPSAN, the situation particularly affects students from technical colleges, Federal Science and Technical Colleges, vocational and commercial schools who rely on NECO and NABTEB qualifications to secure admission into higher institutions.

“This is not proper and not justified. Some federal universities have already concluded admissions for professional courses while students waiting for NECO and NABTEB have not even had a chance,” the association said.

OPSAN consequently called on the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, to intervene and direct JAMB to put the admission process on hold pending the release of all the results.

It also urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to direct universities to suspend their admission processes until candidates awaiting the outstanding O’Level results were given an opportunity to participate.

The association further called on WAEC to release a comprehensive list of candidates who sat for the affected examinations, while urging NECO and NABTEB to expedite the release of their results.

OPSAN argued that proceeding with admissions largely on the basis of available WAEC results placed candidates relying on Nigeria’s national examination bodies at a disadvantage.

“JAMB granting admission without waiting for NECO and NABTEB is a slap on our national examination bodies. Nigeria at this stage of development should be strengthening NECO and NABTEB, not indirectly making WAEC the only yardstick for UTME admissions.

“All O’Level results must be released before admissions commence to give every Nigerian child a level playing ground,” Nwanonyuo said.
