The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has insisted that true opposition credibility in Nigeria’s political arena must be forged through electoral successes, rather than empty rhetoric or hastily formed coalitions.
Speaking during a solidarity visit to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national headquarters at Wadata House in Abuja on Friday, the PDP leader dismissed the pretensions of smaller political groups claiming to lead the opposition. He emphasised that performance at the polls defines relevance.
“You cannot become an opposition party without winning an election. Those who say they are leading the opposition have not contested any election successfully,” Wike declared.
His remarks come amid fluid political realignments as parties position themselves for the 2027 general elections. Wike reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to the newly elected National Working Committee (NWC), using the visit to rally the party toward unity after recent internal crises.
“My coming here is to reassure you of my support. I have come to pledge my loyalty to the National Working Committee,” he stated.

Acknowledging the PDP’s challenges, Wike expressed optimism about its recovery. “Yes, we have a crisis, and we have almost come out of it. It will require hard work and sacrifice to move the party forward,” he said.
He urged the NWC to prioritise reconciliation, especially with defectors who are still eyeing party tickets. “Reach out to them. Most are concerned about opportunities, including tickets. You know what to do,” Wike advised.
Wike also downplayed ongoing legal distractions, citing prior victories. “We have defeated them at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. The same God will see us through. Stay focused and work as a team,” he added.
Responding, the PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, assured the meeting of renewed vigour. “We have capable hands, and we are determined to lead the party to a higher level. We will not disappoint Nigerians,” he said, underscoring the PDP’s role as a viable platform for 2027 victories.
The National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, hailed Wike’s presence as a morale booster, signalling the party’s push to reclaim opposition dominance amid shifting alliances.
