Opposition parties in Lagos have accused the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) of manipulating the July 12, local government elections in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during a News Central TV programme, Inside Lagos Politics – The Fallout of the Local Government Elections, party leaders alleged that the exercise was not a democratic process but a selection.

Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Lagos, Ayoyinka Oni, said: “We don’t have a ruling party in Lagos, we have a ‘ruining’ party. Police officers were sleeping and collecting bribes. The chairman of LASIEC should be sacked.”

Political analyst and civil society leader, Nelson Ekujumi, urged opponents of the ruling party to understand the operations and constitutional provisions guiding elections, saying this would help dispel misinformation and promote constructive participation.

Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, maintained that the polls recorded “90 percent success.” He clarified that only isolated incidents of malpractices were reported and addressed, underscoring the overall security and integrity of the electoral exercise.

Managing Director of News Central, Kayode Akintemi, reaffirmed News Central’s commitment to delivering unbiased, insightful news and facilitating balanced discussions on matters of public interest.  Akintemi stressed that invitations were sent to the APC and LASIEC for their response to the allegations, reaffirming the station’s commitment to balanced reporting.  He added that the exclusive programme would provide viewers with an in-depth forum where diverse voices engaged candidly on the pressing political issues affecting Lagos.
