Omega Power Ministries (OPM) has announced that after very serious thoughts and prayers, it decided to make some far-reaching decisions regarding its scholarship programmes. It noted that while the students enjoy free education overseas, they contend with hunger. To address the issues, the church said it would adjust some of its programmes in line with its earnings through tithes and offerings.
It said: “All OPM scholarship programmes before now do not cover feeding, because we believe the students can do part-time jobs to feed themselves or their parents can send feeding money to them.
“Now, after we just finished paying three years’ school fees and accommodation for OPM overseas students in ESM University, Benin Republic, we just found out that 95 per cent of the students are seriously starving. No food.
“Why? Because most of them, after they finished secondary school, they became bread winners in their family, by selling things on the streets or working as sales girls and boys.
“As they got OPM scholarship to study in Benin Republic, they couldn’t secure a job because there seems to be no jobs in that country and, their parents don’t have money to feed themselves talk more of sending to their children studying abroad.”
It explained that, “in view of this disturbing situation, OPM is hereby activating a feeding programme for all beneficiaries of OPM scholarship in Benin Republic,” adding that there is a restaurant the school management has allocated for OPM free feeding programme.
It further said: “In view of this development, we would painfully suspend the feeding of repentant armed robbers, kidnappers and cultists undergoing rehabilitation in the OPM rehabilitation centre.
“There are more than 300 children picked up from the streets that we are accommodating and feeding daily. There are girls we rescued from different brothels and streets that we are accommodating and feeding while they undergo rehabilitation.
“These repentant kidnappers, armed robbers and cultists we rescued are receiving free accommodation and feeding even as they undergo rehabilitation.
“With the introduction of feeding of students who are on OPM scholarship in Benin Republic, we must stop one of the feeding programmes in order to accommodate these young girls and boys so that they don’t fall into temptation of going back to the streets to commit sin.
“The young men we recovered their guns and handed them over to the police, we are not abandoning them. We’re would still accommodate them, while free skill acquisition training will continue, including their rehabilitation, but no more feeding for them.
“We sincerely apologise for this inconvenience. We would like to say once again that all these are fully funded through tithes and offerings in OPM Church.”
