Opeyemi Bamidele: Efficient manager of the Senate

As an accomplished Nigerian lawyer, human rights activist, and politician, Opeyemi Bamidele has established himself as a critical legislative strategist who currently serves as Senate Leader in the 10th Assembly.

His higher education, which covers a robust, multidisciplinary academic journey, spanning Religious Studies, National Law, and International Jurisprudence, prepared him for the leadership position you occupy today.

His foray into leadership began during his university days as a fierce student activist. While serving as the National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students in 1989, he led crucial negotiations for students’ welfare and the country’s emancipation from military rule.

Soon after his graduation, he deployed his legal skills to defend democracy, serving as part of the defence team for Chief Moshood Abiola during his historic treason trial following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Before he became a senator, he built a formidable political resume across state executive cabinets and the House of Representatives. He joined the progressive political movement in Lagos at a very crucial time in the political history of the Fourth Republic and served in the administrations of then governors, Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola.

In 2011, he shifted base back to his home state, Ekiti and won election to represent the Ekiti Central Federal Constituency 1 in the House of Representatives, where he served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Legislative Budget and Research.

In June 2019, he was elected to represent the Ekiti Central Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly on the platform of the All Progressives Congress. Subsequently, he was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, overseeing vital judicial reforms.

Again, he won a decisive re-election to the Senate, and on July 4, 2023, he emerged as the Leader of the 10th Senate, making him the chief coordinator of executive bills and legislative business in the upper chamber.

His ascension to the exalted seat of Senate Leader marked a new chapter of his legislative influence. Under his stewardship, the 10th Senate has recorded a remarkable surge in productivity, passing more than 90 bills, with dozens already signed into law, a pace that outstrips comparable points in both the 8th and 9th Senates. Among the landmark legislation that scaled through under his leadership are the Student Loan Act, expanding access to higher education financing for Nigerian youths, and reforms to the Nigeria Police Act, which is aimed at strengthening institutional accountability.

As Senate Leader, he has consistently prioritised economic recovery legislation and governance transparency, positioning the chamber as an active partner in national development rather than a passive observer of it. As a result of the confidence his colleagues in the Senate repose in him, he also serves as Vice Chairman of the Senate Constitution Review Committee, directly driving the complex process of structuring national decentralisation, state policing frameworks, and electoral laws.

For his contributions to national development and quality representation, which have earned him the endorsement of the people of Ekiti State, the leadership of his party, and his colleagues in the senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele is winner of The Sun Senator of the Year Award 2026.
