Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu returned to the scoresheet in style on Sunday, netting twice as Trabzonspor raced into a 3–0 half-time lead over Gençlerbirliği in their Turkish Süper Lig clash at Papara Park.
The towering Nigerian had gone without a league goal since finding the net against Galatasaray on 4 April, a run stretching across eight consecutive appearances and roughly 156 days. He ended that wait inside the opening five minutes, rising to head home a cross from Doğuhan Aral Şimşir to put the hosts 1–0 up.
Trabzonspor doubled their advantage soon after when a VAR review awarded them a penalty, which new signing Mohamed Salah converted in the 14th minute to make it 2–0.
Onuachu was not finished. In the 22nd minute, he collected a pass from Wagner Pina down the right and slotted coolly past the goalkeeper for his second of the game, sending Trabzonspor into the break with a commanding 3–0 lead.
The Nigerian’s afternoon ended on a mixed note, however, as he picked up an injury and was substituted around the 42nd minute, making way for new arrival Franculino Djú.
Sunday’s match also marked the first game in charge for head coach Hüseyin Çimşir following a change on the technical bench. Onuachu finished last season as the Süper Lig’s joint-top scorer with 22 goals, and today’s brace will come as a timely boost after a difficult start to the new campaign in which he had failed to score in his first several outings.
