From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Kebbi State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Abubakar Sarkinpawa Sambo, has disclosed that only the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP) will participate in the Zuru state constituency bye-election scheduled to hold on June 20, 2026.
It can be recalled that the former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Honourable Muhammad Zuru, who was from the constituency, died last month, leaving the seat vacant.
Sambo disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting with INEC at the Commission’s headquarters in Birnin Kebbi.
He explained that only two political parties have submitted their candidates for the election within the time frame provided.
Sambo said that the bye-election would take place in 10 wards and 200 polling units.

According to him, “INEC, because of our commitment, is providing a level playing field to provide candidates that will contest in the election. The commission provided 20th of May to 26th for parties to conduct their primaries. Up till May 26 given to all political parties to conduct primaries, only two parties conducted their primaries.
“After successful conduct of the primaries within the timeline, two political parties emerged: All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP). This means that this election is going to be between the candidates of the APC and that of the Labour Party.”
He appealed to all stakeholders to give the commission maximum support to record a hitch-free election and to educate the electorate.
