A group, Ondo Youth Justice and Freedom Forum (OYJFF), has called for the immediate resignation of the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Seun Osamaye, over allegations that she verbally abused, physically assaulted, and threatened a chief magistrate following an unfavorable court judgment.
In a press release signed by its National President, Comrade Blessing Aderele, the group described Osamaye’s alleged actions as a “flagrant violation of the rule of law, egregious misconduct, and abuse of power.”
The group expressed deep concern over the incident, which they said has eroded public trust in the commissioner’s office.
“The disturbing news of the unethical conduct of the Ondo State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Seun Osamaye, regarding her blatant erosion of judicial authority involving Chief Magistrate Mrs. Temitope Alphonso, who was allegedly assaulted and verbally abused by Mrs. Osamaye, is one that struck dumb and left many frozen in disbelief,” Friday’s statement reads in part.
According to court documents and reports, the confrontation took place at the premises of the Ministry of Women Affairs in Akure while Alphonso was on an official engagement with the ministry’s permanent secretary and staff.
The magistrate alleged that Osamaye, dissatisfied with a prior judgment she had delivered, reacted by cursing her, ordering her to “shut up,” and boasting that even the Chief Judge of Ondo State could not question her.
Alphonso further claimed Osamaye threatened her life, warning her to “watch her back” and stating she had the means to make her “go missing,” while adding that neither the governor nor the chief judge could protect her.
The OYJFF stated that Osamaye had initially failed to appear in court related to the matter, and her subsequent behavior demonstrated “arrogance, boorishness, narcissism, disregard for the rule of law, and conduct unbecoming of her position.”
The group emphasized that the judiciary is independent and that dissatisfaction with a ruling should be addressed through appeals, not threats or abuse.
“To think that a woman of her status, who is supposed to be a shining example and a mother figure for the young ones, could deviate into misconduct, thereby eroding public trust, is deeply worrisome, unpalatable, and lamentable,” the release added.
“The office she occupies is a sensitive one that requires the highest level of moral integrity and etiquette.”
In response to the allegations, an Akure Magistrates’ Court, presided over by Magistrate Damilola Sekoni, has ordered Osamaye’s arrest and remand in prison custody after she failed to appear for a hearing on charges of assault, intimidation, and threats to life.
Osamaye’s lawyer claimed she was undergoing medical treatment, but the court rejected the provided medical report as unsatisfactory, lacking key details like admission dates and proof of her unfitness to attend.
The case has been adjourned to January 12, 2026.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has also weighed in, urging Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to suspend Osamaye pending the outcome of the investigation.
The OYJFF echoed this call, urging the governor to “take the bull by the horns” and dismiss her if she refuses to resign, warning that her actions have brought disrepute to his administration.
“This is not the time to remain silent or indifferent; it is a test of the integrity of your administration,” the group said.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion in Ondo State, with many expressing shock over the alleged behavior of a high-ranking official tasked with women’s affairs.
