The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo will on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, hold her seventh inaugural lecture.
The lecture which will be delivered by Prof Ezekiel Adebayo at the Laje Campus of the university by 11am, will focus on the topic “Man and his oral health: Exploits of a maxillofacial surgeon”.
Prof Adebayo who is the Dean, Faculty of Dental Sciences and Chairman, Committee of Deans of the university will examine man and oral health.
The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Isaac Oluyi in a statement released on Sunday quoted the inaugural lecturer as saying that “the health of man is inextricably linked to oral health.”
However, he noted that most people do not pay adequate attention to their oral health except when in severe toothache, have uncontrolled facial swellings or when they sustain facial injuries.
He added that the existing healthcare system is fragmented such that oral health services are poorly integrated into primary health care.
The Inaugural Lecturer, who has made extensive contributions to knowledge, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as maxillofacial trauma, motorcycle related injuries, oral cancer and how oral health affects pregnancy outcomes, will provide examples of the challenges of treating the patients.
Professor Adebayo who is a Maxillofacial Surgeon, will also recommend measures to improve the health of men and women through better health education, incorporation of essential oral health care into the primary healthcare system and better training of health care providers to deliver sophisticated care that would improve the quality of life of victims of these conditions.
Maxillofacial surgery is an operation performed by a highly trained dental surgeon. These procedures can treat diseases or fix injuries of face, jaw, neck or mouth.
