Ondo traditional ruler shot dead during colleague’s burial

A traditional ruler in Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, High Chief Akinwalere Akinola, has been shot dead during the burial rites of a fellow traditional ruler.

The incident occurred on Tuesday while traditional rulers and community members were performing funeral rites for their late colleague.

A firearm was discharged during the ceremony, and the bullet struck Akinola in the head, killing him instantly.

A video of the incident circulated on social media on Tuesday afternoon.

A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “During the programme, a firearm was discharged. The bullet struck High Chief Akinwalere directly in the head, resulting in his instant death.”

It was learnt that the shooting threw the community into confusion, although the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm remain unclear.

Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh confirmed the incident.

He said one suspect has been arrested and that a thorough investigation has commenced to determine the circumstances of the death.
