Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju has weighed in on the feud between the presidency and Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, berating the presidency for allegedly being averse to criticism.
Adeyanju stated this in a Facebook post on Monday.
The presidency, through Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, had accused Onaiyekan of “an abuse of clerical privilege” after the senior cleric divulged details of a July 28 meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).
In similar vein, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala accused the cardinal of engaging in politics because of an alleged preference for Peter Obi.

He said, “Cardinal Onaiyekan wasn’t speaking for Christians; he was speaking for Catholics, the very institution rooting for Peter Obi.
“Therefore, the Cardinal is more political than spiritual. And not all Catholic members are supporting Peter Obi. The President was well within his right to disagree with their assertion regarding Nigeria’s economy based purely on facts, statistics and numbers put into context.”
Reacting, Adeyanju said the presidency must be more accommodating of criticism.
“The Tinubu government is too useless. Attacking the cardinal for speaking truth to power and linking him to the opposition shows how tone-deaf they are to criticism,” he said.
