The Oluwo of Iwoland and Chancellor of Westland University, Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has described the institution as one of Nigeria’s leading private universities, saying its growing academic excellence stems from the dedication, passion and teamwork of its management and workforce.
Oba Akanbi made the remarks during an official visit to Westland University in Iwo, Osun state, where he commended the Governing Council, management, lecturers and staff for sustaining high academic standards.
He said he was impressed by the quality of graduates produced by the university, noting that the number of students graduating with distinctions reflects the institution’s commitment to academic excellence.
He added that although the university may not yet have widespread national recognition, its achievements have positioned it among Nigeria’s best universities and capable of competing globally.
The Oluwo urged Nigerians to approach their professions with dedication, patience and integrity, saying commitment to service guarantees success in both public and private sectors. He linked the same spirit to Westland University’s progress.

Speaking on youth empowerment and unemployment, Oba Akanbi argued that academic qualifications alone are no longer enough in a competitive world.
He urged students and graduates to complement their certificates with
vocational and entrepreneurial skills, saying practical knowledge is essential for career success and self-reliance.
Also speaking, Chief Dr (Mrs) Esther Adepoju, Vice President of Westland University, encouraged Nigerian youths to embrace education as a route to personal development and national progress. She said education builds discipline, character and integrity, and helps discourage youths from criminal activities and other social vices.
Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, emphasised the importance of combining academic learning with practical skills.
He said the council, made up of people from different universities, supports Westland through voluntary service, mentorship and academic guidance, adding that universities have three core responsibilities: teaching, research and community service.
He said the council is committed to ensuring Westland becomes among the highest-ranking universities in the world, inviting young people to choose the school for quality education, practical skill acquisition, and meaningful contributions to humanity.
