First Lady of Nigeria Oluremi Tinubu has called on policymakers and society to protect the teaching profession, improve teachers’ welfare and elevate their status.
Mrs Tinubu made the call in her message to mark the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, commemorated on Monday under the theme “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Futures”.
She said teachers played a critical role in national development by shaping minds, nurturing dreams and preparing future generations to build a better world.
“On this World Teachers’ Day 2026, commemorated under the theme ‘Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Futures’, we celebrate the contributions of teachers to national development,” the First Lady said.
She urged policymakers and the wider society to sustain efforts aimed at strengthening the teaching profession and improving the welfare and standing of teachers.
“I encourage policymakers and society at large to continue to protect the teaching profession, improve teachers’ welfare, and elevate their status,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu also commended teachers for their contribution to the development of the country, saying their work extends beyond the classroom to shaping the future of society.
“Our teachers shape minds, nurture dreams and prepare future generations to build a better world,” she said.
She concluded her message by wishing teachers across the country a happy World Teachers’ Day.
