From Laide Raheem, Abeokuta

Following the arrest of the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the House cancelled its sitting scheduled for Thursday.

Oluomo was on Thursday morning arrested by the EFCC official at the Muritala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, over allged financial crimes.

The Speaker, it was learnt, was flown to Abuja for questioning by the anti-graft agencies.

He was said to have declined several invitations to report at the EFCC over a petition of financial misappropriation.

When our correspondent visited the House of Assembly Complex, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, at midday on Thursday, it was gathered that a plenary sitting earlier scheduled for the day was hurriedly cancelled when the news of the Speaker’s arrest filtered into town.

The Assembly Complex which is usually a beehive of activities was quiet as no member of the House was in the complex.

Some legislative aides and Assembly staff were seen discussing in hush tones.

Efforts to reach the Media Aide of the Speaker, Abdul Gafar, for comment proved abortive, as he neither picked his calls nor returned them.
