Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has promised to support traders affected by the fire at Oluku Market, assuring them of assistance to rebuild the market and restore their means of livelihood.
The governor gave the assurance after visiting the scene of the incident and victims receiving medical treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
During the visit, Okpebholo expressed sympathy with families who lost loved ones and traders whose goods were destroyed in the fire.
“My heart goes out to the victims of the Oluku Market fire, especially the families who have lost loved ones and the traders whose livelihoods have been reduced to ashes,” the governor said.
He acknowledged the hardship caused by the incident and assured the affected traders that his administration would support efforts to help them recover from their losses.
“To our traders, please be assured that you are not alone. My government will support efforts to rebuild the market and help affected traders get back on their feet,” he stated.
Okpebholo also called on residents to observe safety precautions and heed warnings during emergencies, particularly those involving fuel.
He stressed that protecting human life should take precedence over attempts to save property during dangerous situations.
“I urge everyone to take safety warnings seriously, especially during fuel-related emergencies. No material possession is worth a human life,” he said.
The governor prayed for the repose of the souls of those who died, the speedy recovery of the injured and comfort for families affected by the tragedy.
“May God comfort the bereaved, heal the injured, and strengthen every family affected by this painful incident,” he added.
