With over 25 years of experience spanning corporate, consumer, institutional and commercial banking, Oliver Alawuba is a silent force in the banking sector. Those who understand the undercurrents of the banking system in Nigeria always testify to his footprints as an accomplished banker.

He has built a reputation of a transformative banking executive with deep operational expertise and strategic leadership across multiple financial markets. In his current role as the GMD/CEO of UBA, he oversees the bank’s vast operations across 20 African countries, as well as international subsidiaries in the United States, United Kingdom, France, and the United Arab Emirates.

Under his leadership, UBA continues to strengthen its position as Africa’s Global Bank, with a balance sheet exceeding N32 trillion, deposits of over N26 trillion, a workforce of more than 25,000 employees, and a customer base surpassing 45 million. The bank remains a key driver of financial inclusion and digital banking innovation across the continent.

Before he emerged as the GMD of UBA, Alawuba  held several senior leadership positions within the bank, demonstrating a steady rise through the ranks of the institution. He previously served as CEO Designate for UBA Côte d’Ivoire, Managing Director/CEO of UBA Ghana, Regional CEO for Anglophone Countries, Executive Director for the East Bank in Nigeria, and later Managing Director/CEO of UBA Africa.

He also served as Group Deputy Managing Director/CEO, where he coordinated operations across Nigeria and UBA’s African subsidiaries. In these roles, Oliver Alawuba played a central role in structuring landmark transactions and implementing strategies that strengthened UBA’s market positions across diverse economies.

His leadership style is defined by expansion, execution, and institution-building. He has been instrumental in deepening UBA’s digital banking capabilities, improving operational efficiency, and supporting the bank’s long-term goal of becoming a truly global African financial powerhouse.

Outside UBA, he plays a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s financial sector in his capacity as Chairman of the Body of Banks’ CEOs in Nigeria, where he contributes to policy discussions and industry-wide reforms.

The UBA CEO also holds positions on several international advisory platforms, including the Mastercard Advisory Board for the Middle East and Africa and VISA’s Business Council for Central Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, where he provides strategic input on financial inclusion, payments innovation, and regional banking development.

Beyond banking, he is a committed philanthropist. Through the Eberechi Foundation, which he co-founded in 2005, he has financed over 300 university scholarships, paid examination fees for more than 1,500 students, and provided empowerment programmes for widows, orphans, and the elderly in his hometown, Amaifeke, Imo State. The foundation has also contributed to community infrastructure, including roads, solar-powered lighting, and places of worship.

For these towering achievements, Mr. Oliver Alawuba is the winner of The Sun Banker of the Year Award 2026.
