Governor Monday Okpebholo has been honoured by the State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) for prioritising and improving healthcare delivery services in Edo State.
He got the recognition portrait during the association’s 2026 Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Scientific Conference at the Doctors’ House, Ugbowo, Benin City.
Represented by his Deputy, Dennis Idahosa, Okpebholo expressed appreciation to the medical professionals for the honour, describing it as a motivation to intensify efforts at strengthening the state’s healthcare system.
The governor, while appreciating the NMA, described the theme for this year’s conference, “Safeguarding Standards, Advancing Clinical Practice: The Role of Public-Private Partnerships in Our Hospitals,” as apt since it aligns with his administration’s commitment to building a resilient and efficient healthcare sector.
He said he accepts the recognition with humility, stressing that it was not only a personal honour but also an encouragement to deepen the ongoing reforms in the health sector.
“I consider this award an encouragement to do even more in strengthening healthcare delivery across Edo State.”

Okpebholo commended the Edo State chapter of the NMA for sustaining a cordial working relationship with the government through constructive engagement and professional support.
He said the administration remains focused on improving the quality of healthcare available to residents, insisting that the true measure of success lies in the number of lives saved and the confidence restored in the healthcare system.
“The ultimate measure of our success is not the number of hospitals we build or the equipment we procure, but the lives we save, the suffering we prevent and the confidence we restore in our healthcare system,” he added.
As part of activities marking the conference, Okpebholo inaugurated the Edo NMA History Ville and the Dr. Philip Ugbodaga Medical Library and ICT Hub.
Chairman of the NMA, Edo State Chapter, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, praised the Okpebholo administration for reforms in the health sector, particularly the promotion of medical doctors and the introduction of residency training programmes at the Edo State Specialist Hospital.
He described the AGM, which runs from July 27 to August 2, as a significant milestone marking the transition to a new executive that will steer the affairs of the association.
