Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Senator Hope Uzodinma, have traded words over the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.
While Okorocha is accusing Uzodinma of working for Atiku, the governorship candidate said the governor is out to rake mud knowing that Imo people have rejected him.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwumedo, Okorocha alleged that Uzodinma and his supporters are working for Atiku and PDP National Assembly candidates instead of for President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC and the party’s National Assembly candidates.
“Uzodinma and his motley supporters have openly canvassed supports for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and the party’s candidates for the National Assembly election and have also been working secretly with the PDP chieftains in the state for that purpose, claiming that he has decided to toe that line to get back at president Buhari and governor Rochas Okorocha for their non-support of his candidature.”
Okorocha said Uzodinma, not happy with president Buhari’s declaration that APC members should vote for the candidate of their choice in the governorship election, “as a rejection of Uzodinma’s candidature and support to Uche Nwosu’s candidacy on the platform of Action Alliance (AA),” decided to work against him.
He said nobody should express surprise over Uzodinma’s action as he has not allegedly “resigned as a PDP member.”
Boasting that president Buhari would win alongside other APC candidates in the state, with the exception of Uzodinma, Okorocha said the PDP was defeated in 2011 and 2015 in the state; with Uzodinma as one of the bigshots.
In his reaction to Okorocha’s allegation, Uzodinma said the governor is making wild allegations because the people have rejected him.
He said Okorocha’s claim that he is working for Atiku is “fatuous, malicious and a clear evidence that the governor, like a drowning man, is out to cause maximum disaffection within the APC family.”
Uzodinma said the allegation was a blatant lie “fabricated by a politically marooned man who, in his frustration, is throwing darts at every responsible APC chieftain just to see how much it can destroy the APC for denying his son-in -law the guber ticket, particularly now that defeat is starring them in the face.”
Uzodimma urged Imo indigenes to ignore Okorocha, and described the governor as “a man who can never come to grips that it’s all over for him in Imo politics.”
