In the complex and highly competitive world of oil and gas where multinational giants have long dominated the landscape, a few visionary Nigerians have risen to challenge the status quo. One of such men is Chief Tunde J. Afolabi, the quiet but well-respected oil magnate whose strategic thinking and resilience have transformed his company into a respected global energy brand.

As the founder and Chairman of Amni International Petroleum Development Company, Afolabi has demonstrated that indigenous Nigerian companies can compete effectively in a sector historically dominated by multinational corporations. Armed with solid academic credentials, Afolabi began his professional journey with global oil giants such as Texaco and Mobil in the United States. The experience proved invaluable. Working within the structures of major multinational corporations allowed him to master the technical, operational, and managerial dynamics of the petroleum industry. Yet even while building a promising career abroad, Afolabi harboured a bigger dream —to return home and create a company that would contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s participation in the global energy sector. That dream began to take shape when he founded AMNI, his oil firm in 1993 at the time, indigenous oil companies were still emerging, and the industry was largely controlled by international operators.

Under Afolabi’s steady leadership, AMNI gradually carved a niche for itself in offshore exploration and production. The company built strong technical capabilities, operated oil blocks, and demonstrated the kind of professionalism that earned respect within the global petroleum community.

Over the years, AMNI expanded its footprint beyond Nigeria, exploring opportunities in other West African energy markets and positioning itself as a serious regional player.

What distinguishes Afolabi from many industry players is his strategic foresight. Rather than focusing solely on immediate profits, he has consistently emphasised long-term sustainability in energy development. His leadership reflects a clear understanding that the global energy landscape is evolving and that companies must adapt to remain relevant.

Despite his accomplishments, Afolabi is widely known for his understated personality. Unlike many high-profile business figures, he prefers to work quietly behind the scenes, letting results speak for themselves. Those who know him often describe him as methodical, intellectually grounded, and deeply committed to excellence.

Today, the oil titan stands as one of the pioneers of indigenous oil exploration in Nigeria. His journey—from a young geologist learning the ropes in multinational oil companies to the founder of a thriving international petroleum firm—reflects determination, strategic thinking, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

AMNI recently took delivery of a drilling rig at the Okoro Field. The arrival of the rig is both a practical operational step and a strategic statement affirming AMNI’s continued commitment to disciplined development, reinforces confidence in indigenous operatorship, and marks the beginning of another important chapter in Nigeria’s evolving oil story.

This feat also marks more than the start of another offshore campaign for the oil company but represents a defining operational milestone for the company, and a broader statement about the growing capability, capital strength and ambition of Nigeria’s indigenous oil and gas operators.

Located in OML 112 offshore Nigeria, the Okoro Field has long been a cornerstone asset within AMNI’s portfolio with the plan to produce approximately 12,000 barrels of oil per day. It will also strengthen its contribution to national energy supply while positioning the company for sustainable growth into the next decade.
