The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to order the immediate release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to enable him access urgent medical treatment.

This was contained in a video message sent to Daily Sun by the National Publicity Secretary of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, on Thursday, September 18.

In the video, Azuta-Mbata warned that Kanu’s continued detention without proper healthcare puts his wellbeing at serious risk.

He urged the federal government to embrace a political solution to the matter rather than prolonging his stay in custody.

“I’m calling upon Ndigbo-nine (Igbo in general) wherever you are in Nigeria to quickly go and take advantage of the voter registration exercise that is going on right now. Go and get your cards as quickly as possible,” he said.

“Secondly, I would like to call upon the federal government of Nigeria to quickly release Nnamdi Kanu. The Government has no serious advantage in keeping him. It is important that the government ensures his safety and his welfare, and that the Government must allow him to go and get medical treatment as quickly as possible.

“The Government must adopt a political solution to this situation. I do not believe that the Government has any serious advantage in keeping him any further.”

His remarks come amid growing concerns about Kanu’s health condition while in custody.
