The Expanded Global Executive Council of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has approved academic bursaries for 200 students studying Igbo Language in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

The Global Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, disclosed this in a statement on the outcome of a one-day retreat of the Expanded Global Executive Council, comprising members of the Global Executive Committee and state presidents, held on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide National Secretariat in Enugu.

The initiative, announced by the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator Azuta Mbata, is aimed at encouraging the study of Igbo Language, supporting students pursuing the discipline and contributing to efforts to preserve the language and prevent its extinction.

The council described the bursary scheme as a flagship initiative of the Mbata administration and a significant step towards preserving and promoting Igbo language, culture and identity.

The initiative is also expected to complement the ongoing Ohanaeze Ndigbo Professorial Endowment Chair in select universities, established to promote research in Igbo language and culture.

The retreat provided an opportunity for the council to review the organisation’s activities, achievements, challenges and prospects.

At the end of the deliberations, the council passed a unanimous vote of confidence in Mbata, commending what it described as his visionary and result-oriented leadership over the past one and a half years. The council rated his performance “summa cum laude.”

It also resolved to improve internal coordination, strengthen operational methods and enhance the organisation’s effectiveness in fulfilling its mandate as the apex socio-cultural organisation of Ndigbo.

The council further resolved to strengthen collaboration between the Global Executive Committee and state structures, improve communication, establish clearer performance targets and adopt innovative approaches to administration.

The leadership pledged to build on existing achievements while addressing identified gaps through collective responsibility and sustained engagement.
