• Ends Adegbesan’s Scrabble reign
The Ogun State Sports Council has dissolved the executives of all sports associations in the state, effective July 31, 2026.
The directive was announced in a circular signed by Acting Director of Sports, Oluseyi Sonde, which stated that all existing associations stands dissolved with the exception of the Basketball and Football Associations. Those two bodies will remain in office pending the outcome of their respective national federation elections.
The Council commended outgoing executives across board for their contributions to sports development in the state, describing their achievements as a lasting part of Ogun’s sporting history.
Among those departing is Adegbesan, who also serves as President of the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA). Under his leadership, Ogun State became Nigeria’s dominant force in Scrabble, sweeping the country’s major domestic titles — the National Sports Festival event, the NSF Inter Club Championship, and the Asaph Zadok National Scrabble Championship.
The state also produced Nigeria’s top two ranked male players and its highest-ranked female player, Bukunmi Afolayan.
On the international stage, three members of the Team Nigeria squad that won the Best Country title at the World Scrabble Championship hail from Ogun, including Africa’s highest-ranked player, Oluwatimilehin Doko, and side-event winner Cyril Umebiye.
Responding to the dissolution, Adegbesan thanked players and executive members for their role in the association’s success, noting that Ogun State remained Nigeria’s top-performing state in Scrabble across all major titles contested during his tenure.
His time in charge is regarded as one of the most successful periods in Ogun State Scrabble’s history, marked by strong investment in player development that helped establish the state as a benchmark in Nigerian and African Scrabble.
