Iyabo Obasanjo has suspended her bid for the Ogun State governorship after the All Progressives Congress (APC) adopted Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as its consensus candidate for the 2027 election.

In a statement issued on Monday, Obasanjo said her decision followed the party’s endorsement of Adeola as its preferred flagbearer, bringing her gubernatorial aspiration to a halt.

She congratulated Adeola on his emergence and wished him success in the race, while also thanking APC leaders at both the state and national levels for allowing her to participate in the nomination process.

“I congratulate him and wish him every success. I also thank the state and national leaders of our great party for the opportunity to participate in the nomination process,” she said.

“Based on these developments, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial aspiration.”

Obasanjo also expressed gratitude to her supporters for their steadfast backing throughout her campaign, signalling a calm and respectful withdrawal rather than opposition to the party’s internal decision.

Adeola, who currently chairs the Senate Committee on Appropriations, has in recent years shifted his political base from Lagos to Ogun, where he now represents Ogun West in the Senate.

Governor Dapo Abiodun had earlier explained that the consensus arrangement followed extensive consultations within the APC and was intended to preserve party unity and ensure continuity ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
