From Laide Raheem, Abeokuta
The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State for the 2023 general election, Oladipupo Adebutu, has emerged the consensus gubernatorial candidate of the party ahead of the 2027 poll.
Adebutu’s candidacy was affirmed on Sunday evening in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, following a unified decision by party leaders, executive members and stakeholders to present him as the sole flag bearer to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing party leaders and faithful shortly after he was officially unveiled as the governorship candidate, Adebutu vowed to wrest power from the ruling party in 2027.
He expressed gratitude to the party faithful for their unwavering confidence in his leadership, drawing parallels with the contentious 2023 gubernatorial race and insisting the PDP in the state will resist any attempt by the ruling party to rig or manipulate the results of the 2027 poll.
“I extend my deep appreciation to you all – our leaders, executive members at all levels, stakeholders, and members of our party for being unequivocal in your decision to present my humble self as your consensus candidate and flag bearer for the good people of Ogun State in the 2027 general elections, just as you did in 2023. We believe that we won through your votes but were denied through manipulation.
“However, this time in 2027, I believe in God that your votes will count and will put me in office as your duly elected governor”, he stated.
Adebutu claimed that the 2023 governorship election was won by him, declaring his readiness to slug it out with the APC and emerge victorious in next year’s poll.

While emphasising that the 2027 election is a “must-win” for the opposition party in the state, he lamented that, despite Ogun’s strategic geographical location and abundance of natural and human resources, its people have continued to endure hardship under the ruling party.
Adebutu, however, boasted that the PDP is fully prepared to offer an alternative blueprint for governance, promising that the party’s official policy direction will be unveiled in due course.
“The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been in government in Ogun State for over a decade and a half under different nomenclatures, holding our dear state under siege while our people groan under hardship. Whereas we live in abundance and surplus, and have been blessed with both natural and human resources, we are strategically and geographically positioned within the country. Yet, our state remains in dire need of competent leadership with ingenuity, purpose, and direction.
“Our collective responsibility now should be focused on returning our party to the seat of power in Oke-Mosan in order to rescue our people from suffering and maladministration”, he stated.
Acknowledging the internal alignment that led to his selection, Adebutu, who was a House of Representatives member between 2015 and 2019, praised other governorship aspirants who stepped down for the greater good of the party.
He emphasised that the PDP’s path to the Government House depends entirely on internal cohesion and peaceful conduct.
“In the spirit of unity, let me, on behalf of all the candidates whom you have also chosen by consensus at various levels, thank all our brothers and sisters who also aspired to various positions, but for the corporate interest and future success of our party, willingly made concessions and withdrew for our collective good and peace.
“There is no loser among us; we have all won for the party and for the good people of Ogun State”, he submitted.
