As Nigeria searches for new leadership at its football federation, one former international is warning that new faces alone won’t stop the losing. Nathaniel Ogedegbe, a Hall of Fame inductee and academy director, has published an open letter to President Bola Tinubu demanding the country rebuild football from school pitches up — not just replace the officials who just quit.
The NFF’s president, general secretary and executive committee resigned on August 27, days after the Super Eagles missed the 2026 World Cup and the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. “Vacancies alone do not amount to reform,” Ogedegbe wrote, echoing former international Segun Odegbami’s warning that swapping leaders without fixing the system just resets “the cycle of hope, controversy, failure, and resignation.”
Ogedegbe traces Nigeria’s best football back to a school-to-club-to-national-team pipeline: the 1980 AFCON champions, the 1985 U-16 world champions from Lagos schools, and Stephen Keshi, who went from a school Principals Cup team to captaining the 1994 AFCON winners and later coaching Nigeria’s 2013 title run.
He says he lived it — his school, St. Finbarr’s College, sent six players to the Flying Eagles, including himself and Henry Nwosu.
He wants that system rebuilt using cues from Spain, France and Morocco: a protected technical director, one coaching curriculum from U-13 to the seniors, zonal development centers, a national school league, and digital player IDs to stop age fraud.
The letter also pushes to resolve doubt over the NFF’s legal footing — a 2012 court ruling reportedly rejected its name despite FIFA/CAF recognition — and calls for new legislation, published finances, and a rebalancing of voting power away from state associations toward clubs, women’s football, players and coaches. Club licenses, he argues, should require audited accounts and guaranteed wages, with repeat wage defaulters losing them.
Ogedegbe set benchmarks: legal and financial disclosures in 100 days, school competitions and digital registration within a year, licensing enforcement within two, measurable progress within four, and consistent tournament qualification within eight.
His message to the president: “Do not merely fill the vacant offices. Rebuild the system.”
