Odey Cup: Organiser splashes over N1M as curtain falls on tourney

Organiser of the maiden Odey Cup has splashed over one million naira on winners of the grassroots soccer tourney which recently ended in Agege, Lagos.

The championship which was sponsored by erstwhile MFM striker, Stephen Odey, was billed for senior and junior secondary schools across Lagos. Receiving cash prizes from the soccer star, Diary Farm Senior Secondary School walked away with the premier sum of three hundred thousand while Senior Girls of Ijaiye Housing Estate Grammar School pocketed a similar amount in the senior girls section.

In the junior category, girls from Egan Junior Grammar School bagged one hundred and fifty thousand naira after defeating Estate Junior High School by a lone goal while junior boys of Orile Agege Community Junior High School achieved the same feat having defeated Oke Ode Junior Secondary School en route to gold.

Reacting to comments from cheerleaders, the Denmark-based footballer whose childhood school, Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School emerged winner, stated he won’t relent in his bid to discover more talent for the development of the country.

“It felt good because this is where everything started for me as a player, and I am really happy that I am here to do the little I can to help the boys and girls,” Odey said. “Playing inside this school (Dairy Farm) was where I learned the confidence that helped me get to where I am today; without this community, nobody would have heard of Stephen Odey.

“This is a district cup; it’s for schools, and you could recollect that my football started from the Principal’s Cup; that’s where I was discovered; that’s what I am doing so we can have people realizing their dreams the same way I did,” he said.
