As no fewer than 1,530 members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, commenced their three-week orientation course in Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has reiterated the commitment of his administration to the welfare and security of corps members deployed to the state.

Oborevwori stated this on Friday at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I combined Delta and Lagos Orientation Course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.

The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon. Brave Enodeh, said the state government recognised the importance of providing a conducive environment for corps members during their orientation and service year.

According to him, the government had commenced efforts to give the orientation camp a facelift, including the construction of a new borehole and rehabilitation of critical facilities.

He urged the corps members to take the orientation course seriously and participate fully in lectures, physical drills, practical sessions and other activities designed to prepare them for the service year.

Oborevwori said the National Youth Service Corps remained an important platform for preparing young Nigerians for the responsibilities of citizenship and nation-building.

He charged the corps members to use the opportunity of their deployment to Delta to promote national unity by appreciating the diverse ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds of their colleagues.

“You have come from different parts of Nigeria, with diverse ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. Use this opportunity to understand and appreciate one another, build lasting friendships and deepen the bonds that unite our country,” he said.

The governor also urged the corps members to take advantage of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme, saying the skills acquired could create opportunities for entrepreneurship, innovation and self-reliance.

He admonished them to uphold integrity, discipline and responsibility throughout their service year, while avoiding acts capable of endangering their lives or those of others.

Oborevwori urged the corps members to let the spirit of “Service and Humility” guide their conduct, stressing that their contributions, no matter how small, could make a meaningful difference in their host communities.

He assured that the state government would continue to collaborate with NYSC authorities, security agencies and other stakeholders to promote the safety, welfare and effective deployment of corps members across Delta.

Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr John Vandi T. Kwaghe, disclosed that 1,530 prospective corps members, comprising 650 males and 880 females, were registered and fully kitted for the orientation exercise.

Kwaghe said the orientation course commenced on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, adding that the three-week programme had been structured to instil the core values and foundational principles of the NYSC Scheme.

He commended the corps members for their conduct so far, noting that they had displayed discipline and were gradually adjusting to the objectives of the orientation programme.

The state coordinator also commended the Delta State Government for its support to the NYSC, particularly the donation of 1,500 mattresses for the newly constructed hostel.

He said the recently completed re-roofing and renovation of the camp’s multi-purpose hall would improve the delivery of lectures and other indoor activities, particularly during the rainy season.

Kwaghe, however, appealed to the governor for additional facilities, including the sinking of an industrial borehole to address inadequate water supply and frequent breakdown of the existing borehole.

He also appealed for the provision of a new generator, saying the existing generator had outlived its useful life.

The NYSC coordinator expressed appreciation to other stakeholders who had supported the scheme, including Hon. Stella Okotete, whom he credited with renovating the mini pavilion at the orientation camp.

The ceremony featured the administration of the Oath of Allegiance to the prospective corps members and marked the formal commencement of their three-week orientation programme in the state.
