Renowned political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi has revisited an interview granted ahead of the 2023 presidential poll, maintaining that the fundamental questions raised about Nigeria’s political future remain as relevant as ever.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Utomi reflected on his appearance on Channels Television, where he discussed former presidential candidate Peter Obi and the rise of the Obidient movement.
“I said the Obidient movement was being driven largely by citizens, particularly young Nigerians, who were demanding a different kind of leadership aimed at the betterment and growth of Nigeria,” Utomi recounted.
Reinforcing his support for Obi, the socio-political commentator cited character, integrity, and track record as his primary considerations.
“I also spoke about why I supported Peter Obi, who to me is a man of excellent character, integrity, competence, and whose record of service mattered to me,” he said.
Utomi expressed optimism that Nigeria would eventually thrive, but warned that democracy depends entirely on the strength and independence of the institutions built to protect citizens’ rights.

He also revisited his concerns regarding voter turnout, arguing that low participation severely weakens the mandate of any elected leadership.
“That is why I described the present administration as a minority government in terms of its electoral mandate,” he noted.
Turning to the bench, Utomi emphasized that the judiciary carries a historical obligation that extends far beyond merely resolving political disputes.
“History will judge the role the judiciary plays at this moment,” Utomi warned. “If those entrusted with upholding justice fail to redeem the confidence placed in them, history may remember them as having been part of the forces that contributed to the decline of the Nigerian dream.”
He urged all key democratic institutions to rise to their constitutional responsibility and defend Nigeria’s democratic process.
