The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on political contestants to prioritise national unity, love and mutual respect ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Obi disclosed this in a post on his verified X handle on Tuesday, while reflecting on his attendance at the commissioning of the Presidential Campaign Office of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Abuja.
According to him, political contests should not be allowed to create unnecessary divisions among Nigerians, stressing the need for politicians to focus on issues affecting the country.
“I used the opportunity to emphasise the need for us to build a New Nigeria anchored on Unity, Love, Justice, mutual respect, and inclusion, particularly at a time when political contests can become unnecessarily contentious and divisive,” Obi said.
He urged political actors to place their love for Nigeria above their political differences.
“We must insist that our shared love for our country should always be greater than our political differences.
This is my call to all contestants in the forthcoming elections,” he said.
Obi said election campaigns should centre on ideas and solutions capable of addressing challenges such as insecurity, poverty, hunger, inequality and the rising number of out-of-school children.
“Let us compete on ideas that will unite our people, improve their lives, and restore hope to our nation, while maintaining respect, decency, and love for one another,” he added.
He also congratulated Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, and other leaders and members of the APM on the commissioning of the party’s campaign office.
