Obasa: Meranda assumes office, lawmakers chant support

Meranda and Lagos lawmakers

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda officially assumed office on Monday, January 27, 2025.

Accompanied by lawmakers, Mojisola made her way to her new office, with impeached speaker Mudashiru Obasa notably absent.

After the ceremony, photographs of Mojisola and the lawmakers were taken as those around chanted support for her.

“Madam, continue your work; your work is appealing to us. You are the Speaker, you are the Speaker, you are the Speaker.

“Speak for Lagos. Continue with your work,” they said.

Daily Sun reported that security was tightened on Monday morning after Obasa declared that his removal did not follow due process insisting that he remains a speaker.

Officials were instructed by the assembly to tender valid identity cards to gain access to the premises.

Speaking on his impeachment, Obasa said: “I am not disturbed or perturbed and I am not afraid. I will debunk all the allegations levelled against me by the House.

“I have not done anything wrong. I have been a lawmaker for over two decades and I am the longest-serving lawmaker in the House.”
